[Guest blogger Sean Domitrovits will be telling us about his experiences at Mike Fraysse's Sports Camp. Mike Fraysse was the US Olympic Cycling Coach and President of the USCF. Some of the camp attendees often get selected to be part of the US Junior National Team]
As i will skip out on most of the details we were told to basically get dressed and ride out to the starting area.Earlier that morning we had done starting drills while each coach held our sattles while we clipped in.We were told to keep the elbows locked with the head cocked. Doing it for the first time was a bit different, but i soon caught on to what mike would call (as good as the French Time trialist starters), but not literally. After drills we rode out to the time trial starting area about 6 miles away from fraysse's out on the side of an open road. He told us that today was actually going to be a day of flat time trials because of our 2 hour twilight race tomorrow in Jersey. So the time trial began at the bottom of a false flat and people were going out pretty fast.A few of the 14-15 year olds cracked themselves early but i was told that a 15 year old with a 6000 dollar tt bike and was the national time trial winner of last year, was in the group of us,(Curtis). So Mike ordered us from the slowest juniors to the fastest juniors and the last four being, Cam Marcuso, Me, Jordan Strobar, and Agustin Sebaston. There was a 10 minute gap from the starters to the riders at the end.As I set off thinking I might be able to close a lot of the gap to the guy in front of me, I was out to play catch up with Cam. Bryan Burns and I had done some longer time trials before i came to this camp, so i figured i would have the mental aspect of it all pretty set in stone. After a few long gradual hills I hit a pretty decent incline that i had to accelerate into so that i could keep my speed up.Throughout most of the time trial i was just hanging over my tops and jamming the highest gear I could muster. As I rounded the last corner into an uphill sprint i threw my bike across the line and ended up getting the 4th fastest time of the day which wasn't bad considering one of the people ahead of me was 20 (a Cat 1) and the other was the national time trialist winner mentioned earlier. It went pretty well with a time of around 8:20 on a 3.25 mile slightly uphill course.I'm writing this while getting ready to race in augusta New Jersey today. I feel pretty relieved that its a crit because of my cooked legs, but I hope I can grab a result today to bring home the bacon.
Thanks for reading.
